June 12

Yesterday we went to Colin's first physical therapy appointment. We really liked the therapist, Kevin, and are happy to have him helping us with Colin going forward. He tried to examine Colin but he had just woke up from his nap about half an hour earlier and was filled to the brim with energy. There was no keeping him still and Kevin literally had to chase him around the room the entire appointment. He was taking equipment off of the walls, crawling on machines, banging his hands on the cabinets, repeatedly hitting his head on the bed with Kevin tried laying him down - I was baffled by his behaviour and I just kept thinking "who was this child"?? He was out of control! It took almost an hour for what should have been a 30 minute appointment. We did manage to get all of our questions answered and we were able to practice the stretching technique that we will need to use for one minute three times a day to stretch his hip muscles.

The challenge will now be trying to get Colin to lay still for one minute at a time! We go back next Wednesday to see how we're doing. Kevin said that in two to three weeks he should go from a 5% range of motion to somewhere in the 20% range. The goal is to get him to about 30%. Once he has the wider range of motion it may take 2-3 months before he realizes he can stand up straighter and begin to walk more upright since so far he's been programmed to walk with the arch. The good news is that by doing all of this so early, we have a great chance of preventing any additional arching which would have probably resulted from the tight hip muscles. Yey! Here's to proactive parenting!! : )
